First launched in 2002, the programme has seen
5 cohorts of recruits – that’s around 160 managers who have joined the
NHS via the Gateway to Leadership programme.
From the
beginning, the programme has been enthusiastically supported by the
Chief Executive of the NHS and all NHS organisations, who recognise
Gateway participants as able senior managers and an asset. It’s no
wonder that the reputation of the programme is growing year on year.
And if you need proof that Gateway people progress quickly through the NHS, here it is:
2002 Intake:
92% have moved on from their first role
1 is now a chief executive
1 is now an assistant chief executive
8 are now directors
2003 Intake:
94% have moved on from their first role
7 are now directors

2004 Intake:
Over 86% have moved on from their first roles
2 are now directors
5 are now assistant directors

2005 Intake:
Over 60% have moved on from their first roles
3 are now directors
6 are now assistant directors

(Note: there was no 2006 intake)
2007 intake:
Started in the NHS from March 2008
6 are assistant directors
12 are senior managers / heads of department
