The fifth National Breaking Through Conference will be held on 20th October 2008 in Manchester Central, Manchester and will demonstrate the investment and belief this programme has and continues to elicit.
Demographic and population changes within England require us to look closely at the workforce in the NHS and the needs of an increasingly diverse population. Without question, the NHS needs a workforce that reflects its population at all levels of the service. Strong leadership is central to ensuring the NHS delivers on a very demanding agenda which provides healthcare that is accessible, high quality and value for money. This conference provokes thought and enables debate into how the NHS can develop a workforce that truly represents the population it serves and become a world class organization providing the best care to everyone through a truly diverse workforce.
Key note address will be delivered by David Nicholson, Chief Executive of the NHS.
The conference will give delegates the opportunity to:
• Understand the importance of a diverse workforce at senior
levels in the NHS in light of demographic changes in England
• Understand the barriers to career progression for Black and
Minority Ethnic (BME) staff in the NHS and learn from best
practice examples elsewhere
• Celebrate the contribution made to the NHS by BME staff over
the last 60 years
• Discuss local issues in relation to leadership with specific
reference to BME staff
